How to build a woodstrip epoxy canoe

Slight damage cedar strip canoe - epoxy varnish , Since i didn't build the canoe, i am not quite sure how to repair it. basically i am looking for some advise as to whether i need to to use epoxy to make repairs, or if i can get away with just sanding and then a coat of varnish to make it look good again. having some trouble uploading pics - hope these will work for now.
